Edit documents directly on network with android

While editing and saving documents on a network with Word in windows the entire process takes places where the document is located and the file is not transferred to the device. However while attempting this on android, the file seems to be copied into the android device and the changes made are limited to the downloaded file in the device. This file is then required to be separately uploaded to the network which causes too many copies of the file floating around. Is there a workaround for this i.e. can a document be edited in an android device without copying the document to the device?

Re: Edit documents directly on network with android

Welcome to Android Central! Which office app are you using on Android? Assuming it has access to your network files over WLAN, it's still downloading locally and only saving edits locally?

I realize that this isn't what you're asking, but this is one of the huge benefits of using Google Drive--everything is in the web, and every edit you make is constantly synced..
