If not iPhone 6 - then what else?

I'm closer and closer to buying a new phone to replace my old and faithful Galaxy S3 - for some time I was sure I was going to get iPhone 6 but after seeing it today for the first time IRL and playing with it for a bit, I was very unpleasantly surprised - the bezels are huge for modern standards and the screen, while great, looks silly high for its width which makes the handset resemble a sword hand... It's not like I was blown away by the phone when I put it alongside my S3 - and that's certainly what I thought would happen.

Having said that, what alternative do I have? I'd like a good quality display (5 inches tops; I mean - anything that fits comfortably in the pocket. I'd guess even a theoretical 5.2" bezelless phone fit though I doubt there are such) and as smooth user experience as possible. LG G3 is huge, Samsung S5 is ugly (personal opinion, not a flamewar starter), HTC One M8 doesn't bewilder me with its beauty, Nexus 6 is huge. Are there some big new releases planned for the upcoming weeks/months?

Thank you in advance for all the recommendations :)

Go play with a '14 Moto X at a local carrier store. Despite the difference in screen size, the overall dimensions are pretty close to the iphone 6 due to the smaller bezels and it already has 5.0. Edit: the Sony Z3 compact seems to be another good choice.

have a look at the LG G3 - huge screen, super skinny bezels. I had the S4, and really prefer the G3 (but I do miss the bright colors of the AMOLED screen). The G3 is only slightly bigger then the S4. Marginally wider, and a bit taller - but not a huge difference. Plus I find the curved back on the G3 fits my hand better.

HTC's M8 is supposed to be really awesome - I never played with one, and only had a few minutes with last year's M7.

MotoX is a really awesome phone too - but for me the "meh" camera (and price) somewhat deterred me.

I haven't had ANY hands on time with BlackBerry or Windows devices so I can't say anything about those one way or the other.
