I have HTC Desire 610 with 64 gig memory card. I cant write to the card when the card is in the phone. The card works fine in a reader. I have done all the usual things--tried using Sync, factory reset, mount/unmount, formatting card etc

Have you been able to use/write to it before?
Some devices don't like bigger SD cards for some reason.

You can't write to the root of the card using a file manager, or some app can't write to its folder on the card?

If it's the latter, since KitKat, an app can only write to a folder it owns (or is part of a group that owns that folder) whether it's in internal OR external storage. (The permissions change was made to the external card in KitKat - it's always been there in internal storage.) Since Jellybean and older didn't set permissions on the card, no app that created a folder in Jellybean can write to it in KitKat. Copy off the files (to a computer), delete the folder, let the app create the folder again and copy the files back.

You'll have problems editing other apps' files too, unless the phone is rooted and you use a rooted editor.
