Need help with problem - HTC One M7 crashing and stuck in reboot since update

I got a phone from my boyfriend in mid October. He had owned it for a few months prior to this without problems, and shortly after I got it I updated the software to 4.3.

In the last few weeks since the update I have had problems where the phone will stop working properly, for example on one occasion I become unable to make phone calls although it had a full signal. The call option was blanked out and this meant I had to reboot the phone but I was unable to do so.

On 2-3 other occasions I've had to reboot the phone due to the battery going flat and I think there was another time that I had to do it as the phone was working very slowly.

Every time I try to reboot the phone will not do so properly and I don't get the normal Android options of Power Off, Restart etc.

Instead I see the white bootloader screen when I try and boot from there sometimes I freezes and does nothing or other times it will do a 'fastboot' into safe mode. The only way I can get it to restart normally is to press the power button at the same time as the volume up button.

I am getting fed up with this happening and don't know what the problem is or how I can stop it. The phone is only 6 months old and I can only guess that the software update caused this to happen.

I am going to try and make sure the phone is charged up all the time so it doesn't get flat enough to have to reboot but if it won't allow me to make calls this is problematic.

I also need a way to eliminate the problem as the phone is as new and not rooted. It's working now but I don't know how long it will be until I have another problem and although I normally keep the phone on there will be a time when I need to switch it off and don't want to have more restart problems or lose what I've got stored on the phone.

Welcome to the forums.☺

A Cache Partition wipe after a system update is said by some to be good practice. Even if it doesn't work you will lose nothing.
However, stronger medicine may be required....a Factory Reset, before doing which you will need to back up your personal data first.
Make sure before attempting either that your battery is good....that may be at least part of the cause of your problems.

If you think it's due to the update, and it was over the air (you didn't download a file to your computer and run a program to update the phone), bring it in to your carrier and ask them to fix it. Over the air updates that go wrong (and the way Android does over the air updates is about 27 years out of date, at least - we were doing error-free updating back in 1987, just not on cellphones yet, but there's no reason Google couldn't use the technology) are the responsibility of the carrier.

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm not saying that the update is the reason for the problems but it does seem strange this has happened since the update and it had never happened before then.

I did do the update over the air, but I've had several Android phones of the past 4 years, often changing phone once or twice a year and I have NEVER had a problem like this with any of them and have never plugged in the phone to update it via my PC. I've never doing a cache wipe, partition wipe or anything else and have only ever updated my phone with the charger plugged in or with the battery full.

I can't bring the phone to my carrier because my current service provider is not the supplier of the phone. My boyfriend got the phone as an upgrade on his contract in the UK and we are current in Spain. The phone was unlocked so I put my SIM in it as he did previously with his Spanish SIM.

I would just like to ensure that this doesn't happen again and to find out what to do if it does in order to stop it. I did a factory reset a few days ago and have now re-installed everything on the phone and don't want to lose it again. The problem has appeared again since the factory reset when the phone went flat.

As for the other problem with the phone unable to make calls out I'd like to know why this happens too. I had this problem on my HTC One Mini and in that case I just reset the phone using the power button and 'restart' and it was working perfectly again, although I don't know why I lost the ability to make calls or send SMS when I have a contract phone and the signal was full. With the HTC One when I had the same problem I pressed the power button but each time I do that for any reason it doesn't show the menu to switch the phone off or restart, just the white Android boot screen.
