Maybe the stick is formatted in a way that the Nexus can't read it?

If it's FAT32 (or xFAT if it's large enough), and you're using an OTG cable, search stick mount in Play Store and try one of the free ones that don't require root (unless your phone is rooted, then use Chainfire's). Or see How to Use USB on the Go (USB OTG) In Any Nexus Without Rooting Android Gadget Hacks

The Nexus 5 supports OTG, but it doesn't natively support external drives on OTG.
