I have a samsung galaxy GT-S5830i and i am confused on how to switch from 2g to3g. There is no as such "use 2g only" check box in mobile network setting.

On the 5830, GSM is voice and text. Data is 3G. If you want mobile data on, enable mobile data. If you want it off, disable it. If you want everything off, turn on airplane mode. (There's no way to get 3G but not 2G that I know of.)

There are widgets that let you turn data on and off easily - try Data Enabler Widget.

(You don't "switch from 2G to 3G" - you use 2G when you're talking or texting and 3G when you're using data - the internet, etc. That's just the way the phone works.)
