How do you know if you need to only replace the lac screen or digitizer also on a Galaxy S3?

How do you know if you need to only replace the lac screen or digitizer also on a galaxy s3

My galaxy s3 has a cracked screen. The display is black and does not respond to touch. Does this mean I need a digitizer and led screen.
