Why am I unable to sync ALL of my phone contacts with Gmail on my Xperia?

Synching ALL my phone contacts with gmail on Xperia

I have a Sony Xperia. Half of the contacts in the address book are linked to my gmail account, half are 'phone contact only - no backup'. There doesn't appear to be any way to switch these to backing up to gmail, and I don't know why they saved differently on first entering the info. There's an awful lot, I don't want to enter them all again. Can you help?

Welcome to Android Central! It may be that when you were entering those contacts, it was defaulting to Phone account. It's always important to pay attention to what account you're adding things like contacts and calendar events to.

The best approach is to try exporting the contacts to a .csv or multiple .vcf file, and then import that file back into your Google contacts (either on the phone, or into your Google Contacts website using your computer browser).
