How to fix problems with email sync on galaxy s4?

I'm having issues with email sync on my galaxy s4. It only works when I also have my inbox open and refreshed to be up to date in my browser. It used to sync fine without me constantly having to refresh a browser page. And yes, I have sync turned on. Any ideas how to fix this?
