does smartphones come equiped with a mail app?

my husband has an app that says mail, so I opened it and it had three different options ( Microsoft exchange active sync, yahoo mail, and other(POP3/IMAP) is this something that came on the phone or something he had to download?

Well, big brand phones have their own email 'client' app, to which you can choose to add some or all of your email accounts. Samsung call theirs Email, Google Nexus would use the Gmail app where you can add more accounts. I don't know what HTC, LG or Sony call theirs.

There are other popular independent email client apps that are downloaded from the Play Store.

Yahoo and other email providers have their own apps which you can use instead. I use the Yahoo app.

Is called Email too. Also came loaded with the Gmail app.
