How can I tell if I can use a pedometer on my Samsung android phone?

I installed the Noom app, and it only showed 10 steps for the whole day. I installed the Pacer app, and it mentioned not all phones can use the pedometer apps. It said to turn on the background something, but I can't find it.

I have a Samsung Centura (I think that's what it's called) and it's Android 4.0.4. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I did a Play Store search using 'pedometer'. Vast numbers came up. Surely one of those would be suitable?
