why is my samsung s3 freezing on screen and switching itself off?

my samsung s3 froze and switched itself off, now i can only turn it on for a few seconds till it freezes and turns off again. I have tried taking the battery out and rebooting. I have also tried holding the volume up/home/power button and rebooting cache, but the phone still freezes and turns itself off. i dont know much about phones so please can someone help!

It sounds like it may be in need of a new battery. I stress 'may' - diagnosing at a distance is rather uncertain.
