Why won't my phone battery charge or turn on?

Phone will not turn on - or charge battery

My Galaxy S4 got really hot while charging and would not retain a battery charge. If I tried to turn it on it would be stuck on the Sprint logo. Then it quit trying to charge the battery. I took it to a Sprint store. They checked the battery and it was good. They tried putting a new battery in the phone and it would not come on. Any suggestions?

Evidently there's a short in the phone. Suggestion? Have it repaired. And I'd like to know how they determined that the battery was good. All they can determine is that it runs another phone for a few minutes. Even a battery so far gone that it's lost half it's life will do that - but I'd hardly call it a good battery.

(Rooting doesn't cause or fix shorts.)

Agreed, something happened with my S3. When I tried my friends battery it seemed to function well.
