Nexus 7 battery Unknown can not update.

I have been using my nexus 7 since 2012 having no real issues. A few months back however, the battery measurement failed and I have the exclamation mark up there instead. No big deal since I charge every day and don't mind it really, especially since it is out of warranty.
Now however the problem comes. I want to update to Android 5.0.2 finally, since I got the OTA. But the OTA refuses to install unless there is battery on the unit. Even if I hook it up to the plug it requires me to ”wait for a little charge”. Problem is, the unit is 100% already.
So does anyone have any suggestion how I can force the installer to start?
