I have a galaxy s4 and im trying to update it from android 4.2.2 but everytime I hit the check for update button it says no update available. Why is it doing this?

It depends on your cell phone provider. For example, at&t may have released an update to 4.4.4, but if you're on Sprint you have to wait until they released their own update.

Also if you've rooted your S4 that may prevent you from getting updates

The carrier has to release an update for that version for that phone - each phone's ROM is a little bit different.

As for rooting, it won't prevent the phone from downloading an update, but it will prevent he update from installing (it "fails" [actually succeeds - in not installing to a phone it shouldn't install to, because that could brick the phone] at around 15% to 25%).

AT&T has released at least one 4.4.4 update - the Note 3 - but I don't know if they've released one for the S4. You can ask at an AT&T Device Support Center (since they'd have 4.4.4 for the phone if it was released). Ask your local store where the nearest DSC is (it may even be in the rear of that store).
