How do I get my HTC Desire 610 to connected to 3G?

In Settings, Wireless & Networks, More, Mobile Networks, Preferred Network Type (the steps to get there may be slightly different in your device), is the phone correctly set to 3G or whatever setting you prefer?
Also, what sort of signal is available in your area? If you're unsure, there are online coverage maps for each network, or your network provider would be able to advise.
Also, if 3G radio is available, is the signal strong enough to prevent the phone from falling back on the 2G signal?
