Can I remove the Google microphone gray rectangle tangle from my home screen?

I don't think it got uploaded... But if it's a widget, you should be able to remove it by tapping and holding on it and dragging it to the delete button (usually a trashcan or an 'X').

Some launchers, however, make the search button/widget a part of their layout. In these cases, you can't remove it unless the launcher offers that as an option in its settings. For instance, with Themer, you can have the search bar always present in the homescreen, but it can be disabled. I believe Google Now Launcher has that always showing the search bar with no option to remove it.
