Welcome to Android Central! There are a few possibilities:
1. A failing battery. Turn the phone off, remove the battery, place it flat on a table, and try to spin it. If it spins freely, it's bulging in the middle, which is a bad sign. But even if it doesn't spin, it's still worth trying a different battery.
2. A corrupt file on the SD card. This can cause the system's Media Scanner to get stuck trying to scan the same file over and over again, which causes the CPU usage to skyrocket. Try unmounting the card in
Settings>Storage and remove it. You can also put the card into your PC and run chkdsk to look for bad sectors:

3. A rogue app that starts going nuts, leading to excess CPU usage and overheating. Check your battery stats to see if any app is using an unusually high percentage of battery.
