Welcome to Android Central! Were the contacts saved to your Google account? This is one of the biggest reasons why you should do this, because the contacts get synced immediately to your Google account in the cloud, where they're kept safe and secure. You can easily sync them to any new device that is logged into your Google account.

If the contacts were instead saved to the local Phone account, then it will be much harder to try to get them, because the database they're stored in is not readily available to the user.
