I've been having problems with the Nexus 4 and am considering an upgrade. I don't want to spend more than $450 if possible. I'm looking into the MotoX and the HTC M8 (I think the M9 will be out of my budget). It seems that the M8 has been criticized for its camera.... is it that bad?

Welcome to Android Central! My wife has an M8, and it's an excellent phone. But you're right, the camera isn't terrific, and it has an odd oleophobic lens coating that can get scratched up easily (although you can buff the coating off easily as well). There have also been complaints of a purple tint that develops due to damage to the camera sensor. On the whole, photos are fine, but it just seems that there are more complaints about it than your average camera on these forums.

I've heard that the Moto X's camera is also on the average side, although I don't have direct experience. Have you considered a Nexus 5? I've taken some amazing pictures with it, and it should fit your budget easily. The main disadvantage is the very mediocre battery, of course.
