Since it's not a problem, there's no way to answer your question.

Until 4.4, the SD card was an external storage device, so any app could store anything anywhere.

Since 4.4 it's part of the Linux filesystem, so an app can only access what it has permissions to. So an app that's a member of group A can't access a folder owned by Group B and not giving access to all.

You can revert to the old behavior by rooting the phone (it can't be done with an unrooted phone) and running an app like NextApp SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD (root) or by editing the permissions in /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml.

    EXFAT to the rescue???
I wonder if someone could please enlighten me!

Having purchased an Android 4.4 tablet approx 4 months ago, I quickly found that I couldn't write (paste) to my sd card or usb stick. Both of which were 32Gb formatted as Fat32 (although I think NTFS gave the same result?).

(I assume that this is the same issue as the subject of this thread)

However, what I found interesting is that using EXFAT to format, fixes my problem - I can write to my cards again!

So why do I need to 'root' my tablet or use other utilities etc? EXFAT seems to do the job.

Or am I over simplifying the issue (or solution). And why haven't I seen this mentioned elsewhere??

    Thanks for any help.
