What is Touchwiz?

I have a Verizon Galaxy Note 3. I was reading about the Lollipop update and just learned about something called TouchWiz on Samsung phones. I'm a bit confused about how the os works. What things does TouchWiz do? Does Android run inside TouchWiz? Where does TouchWiz end and Android begin? And how does Verizon's software fit into all this?

Can anyone explain this or point me to an article anywhere that explains how it all works.

TouchWiz is a front-end touch interface developed by Samsung Electronics with partners, featuring a full touch user interface. It is sometimes incorrectly identified as an operating system.

And there are lots of comments about Touchwiz. I'm getting continual notes: Unfortunately, Touchwiz has stopped.
What's up with that? I understand that TW is an interface, is it connected to the smart stylus?
I'm seeing there is a way to disconnect it. Is that recommended?
