If your sensor thinks it's dark the screen will not illuminate as brightly. It sounds counter intuitive but actually the brighter the surrounding the brighter the screen. Try cleaning the sensor near the ear piece and see if it will respond. Also check that you didn't accidentally take it out of auto brightness, either by going to your quick settings screen, usually a tab on you notification pull down, or by going to your display screen settings. It could be possible also that you've lost your back light. This could have been caused by overheating during charging or for some other reason, including just having a defective backlight. If you go to your settings screen and adjust the brightness manually and it doesn't change I would take it in for repair, as you would have likely lost the backlight all together.
