I bought a gS5 for sprint clean ESN but they owe money on lease, can put it on another carrier?

I bought a galaxy S 5 for sprint clean ESN it on Craigslist from Kymberly Ooten (theif). I checked the ESN before I paid, it said it was clean. But when I tried to have it turned on Sprint said it is under lease so I could not turn it on. I went to the police they said It was not reported stolen so there is nothing they could do. I was hoping I could just put it on another carrier by hacking it so it is not a total loss. please help if you can.
