Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Can they hear you if you use speakerphone, or wired/Bluetooth headsets? If so, then your phone mic is probably faulty.

Look in the phone's manual to locate the tiny mic hole. Use a strong light and a magnifying glass to look into the hole. You should see metal. If you see lint, threads, dust, etc., use the pointed end of a wooden toothpick to loosen it sll and tap the phone gently on that side to get all that stuff out of there. Dirt is a great sound insulator.

If you see metal, either the mic is shot, as B. Diddy said, or the earphone jack is bad (the mic goes through there, so when you use a wired handsfree, the internal mic doesn't pick up noise) or a wire or a connection broke.

If it doesn't work on speakerphone, normal phone and Bluetooth headset, there's a problem on the motherboard.
