My new "smart phone" somehow downloaded over 600 contacts.
I want to remove about 90%
It would be easier to remove all and then add the ones I want.
HOW DO i REMOVE ALL IN ONE STEP?? PLEASE

Welcome to Android Central. :)
That's drastic, but how about Settings, Apps, All, scroll to Contacts, and select Clear Data.
I'm not certain that that would do it, so please say how you get on.

Trying to delete that many contacts using a phone is sure to fail with a 'Too many contacts deleted' message (or something like that). It's a safety feature to avoid accidental deletion and if I remember correctly it doesn't give an option to override and delete anyway.
Best to to contacts online. Select All contacts, then Delete, confirm deletion in the next box and done.
If you have second thoughts about what you did later, thiss should restore them as long as it hasn't been over 30 days since they were deleted:
