I am in the market for a new laptop or Chromebook. I have been out of the tech loop for a while and I'm looking to get some general knowledge about some products. My budget is around $500+, but I am not set on that. Anything will do to point me in the right direction. Thanks for the help AC community!

First things first--decide between a full PC/Mac laptop or a Chromebook. Is that a tough decision for you? They're definitely not interchangeable, but it depends on your needs.

    And don't forget Linux.

Do you want compatibility with the most programs? Windows. Do you want the most free programs (and/or the most control over your device)? Linux. Di you want Apple compatibility? MacOS.

Chromebook? I don't see any advantage to it.

I actually think there is an advantage for Chromebooks--the growing Google/Chrome OS ecosystem. That and the relatively dirt-cheap prices. I also think they're a bit more marketable to the average consumer, who's still going to regard Linux laptops as more for tech wizards.
