My incoming call screen is no longer the contact photo with swipe, how did it change?

My incoming call screen is no longer the contact photo with swipe

A new grey box now appears at the top of the screen to answer or decline the call. Sometimes the old caller ID photo is there (which I like) but more often than not it's the small grey box which is awful. How did it suddenly change to this? And can I get rid of it?

This is a new feature with Lollipop. It displays a banner at the top of the screen if you're in an app or the screen is unlocked .
It is meant to be preferable to being interrupted by a call coming in. There's no way to turn this off.
