Alternative to Rom Manager 4.+ to upgrade android 2.1

I have a Backflip with android 2.1 that I'd like to upgrade to CyanogenMod 7.1.
All the docs I've read indicate that I need Rom Manager and specifically v4.8.x.x so that it will install on 2.1.
There are a zillion dead-links that supposedly point to Rom Manager 4.8.x.x, but, most of these links are spam and endless loops that yield nothing.
Did it not occur to anyone to create an archive on google (or elsewhere) of these old APK's, (like they do for drivers) ?

That said,...
what can I use as a suitable alternative ?
Preferably something that can be downloaded and is known to install on 2.1.
TIA

Try the Area51 Forum. They've done a lot of work on older phones and someone may still have a 4.8 apk then can send you or put up on a site for you to download. But with a 528MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM, I don't think CM7 is going to run very well on that phone. (It's more than 5 years old and designed to be updated to Eclair. CM7 is Gingerbread. It's probably just too much OS for that phone.)

The only reasonable alternative (you can't really run any current apps on the phone, even with Eclair) is to replace the phone.

Thanks Rukbat.
This was my first attempt to root and play around with an old phone. Perhaps it is just too old to mess with.
