HTC One M8, VZW - SMS service not working. How can I get it working?

HTC One M8, VZW - SMS service not working.

I have an M8 from VZW, about a year old. It currently runs 5.0.1

Starting a couple of days ago, SMS messaging is failing, for both send and receive. I've been using Handcent SMS, and if I try to start that, the screen goes blank for a second than returns to whatever kicked it off. I tried installing ChompSMS, and while that will run, it won't send messages. Nor am I able to receive SMS with either app. Both are up to date.

For HandCent, I've tried (1) Force Stop, (2) clearing cache, (3) Disable/Enable. I've also tried power cycling the phone, and a soft reset.

My suspicion is that there is something wrong with the underlying SMSManager service, rather than the apps.

Any ideas? I'd like to avoid a factory reset if possible.

Curious, that seems to work. I'd never used it, since HandCent got installed when I set up my M8 (I'd previously
used a Galaxy Nexus).

I'll have to look into this further - I liked HandCent's UI.

Did you also try Clear Data in Handcent's App Info page?

No - I was worried that I'd delete my old messages, which is undesirable.
