can toothpaste damage a phone screen?

I rubbed a little aquafresh toothpaste with a microfibre cloth gently in circles for half a minute on some scratches on my lg g3 screen, then left it for a minute and rubbed it off again with a mildly damp microfibre cloth. Sadly, it didn't work.
I'm worried that it might damage the phone screen in the long run- more specifically the oleophobic
coating.
Will this harm the phones screen?

I imagine it would remove the oleophobic coating very effectively, being mildly abrasive. It's not abrasive enough to remove scratches from glass, though. Could you not apply a screen protector, which will render fine scratches invisible?

I saw a guy on YouTube using something originally intended for removing scratches from a car's windscreen. He said it worked on his phone screen. Sorry I can't remember details, except that it was some sort of hard sponge plastic block.
