How do I delete duplicated or extraneous contact information?

Samsung S4 (SCH-I545) with Lollipop. Some contacts, especially those that have been imported/copied from previous phones, contain duplicated fields, including phone numbers, notes, addresses, etc. that are visible when "View Contact" is selected. But when the "edit" tab (pencil icon) is selected, this extraneous information is not shown and therefore cannot be deleted. I noticed this with the previous O/S as well as previous phone models. How do I get rid of this crap short of deleting the entire contact and manually re-entering the information (that I would have to copy down)?
