Why does the notification panel go crazy when I put phone to my ear?

Every time I try to talk on my phone,with it up to my ear, it goes crazy. The notification panel comes down and starts doing things like turning wifi off, location on or off, changing brightness etc....HELP!!

I have a similar problem with my Moto G. It will just go off and open random things etc.

Freaked me out at first. I thought that my phone had been hacked or something

I find that turning the screen off and on again does the trick - most of the time. If not. Turn it off and on again. Glide your hand over it and try again. (Not scientifically proven. But, it works for me!)

Which phone is it BTW?
