I mistakenly installed the lollipop update on my Samsung Galaxy S4. I want it removed and return to the previous operating system.

Welcome to Android Central! It's not simple, but you could try flashing the KitKat firmware via Odin: http://forums.androidcentral.com/amb...interface.html. Find the correct firmware here: Firmwares - SamMobile.

If you're successful, you will probably start getting update notifications again, so you may have to root the phone in order to disable the system updater.
