Can I use my google account and not google+ to register for moto care?

I got a new moto e phone, followed the prompts for moto care which is supposed to let me wipe the data off my phone if it gets stolen. I go to sign in to the motorola site and wants me to create a google+ account. I'm not particularly comfortable making a google+ account -- in part because I don't know what it would mean in terms of public exposure. I do have a google account -- can I just use that?
