I was working outside last week, listening to music with my phone in my pocket when it started raining. The phone worked for a while, but then in the afternoon it shut off. I took off the case and let it dry out for a while, then plugged it back in. It took several days for the phone to react, and now it will turn on but some of the buttons (the home button and the tabs button on the bottom of the phone) won't work. Furthermore, the screen is dark, and if I open a page, like "Music" or "Facebook", the pages are translucent--I can see the music page behind the facebook page, and so on. Any idea how I fix this?

If there's water damage, you may be unable to fix it, alas. Read this guide by Rukbat:
