Why did my S4 delete the pictures on my SD card?

[AC Question]

Over the last two days I have received these messages: "your SD card is ready to remove" and the current one "SD card is blank or has unsupported files." I checked and, use enough, my pictures are completely gone. Of course I had not backed them up yet. : (

I did nothing to change any storage settings in my camera or phone settings. These messages appeared on my lock screen just like other notifications . What is going on? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
