i keep getting 2 notifications when i get a text message since i upgraded to Lollipop

When i get a text i get 2 notification sounds and 2 little envelopes on the status bar...i also do not get a notification if i have the person i am texting texts open i have to close the text window or i get no notification...i really hate this lollipop i wish i could go back to the old ways

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? I assume it's a Samsung. The lack of notifications when you're open to that particular conversation is actually normal on Nexus devices. If you want it to alert you even if you're in that conversation, our Ambassador Kelly Kearns found that the Verizon Messages app can do this, and I think it doesn't require you to be on Verizon.

Regarding the duplicate notifications--do you have more than one messaging app on the phone?
