I have searched everywhere (including other forums) for a clear, concise answer. Some ROM installation instructions says that the phone has to be rooted before installing, others don't mention anything about rooting.

So, I have 3 questions:

1. Does a phone need to be rooted before installing a custom ROM?

2. If the answer to #1 is yes, can I unroot the phone after installing the custom ROM?

3. Can rooting remove the "unlocked" status of the phone, therefore forcing me to unlock it again?

It really depends on the phone that you are using. What kind of phone do you have?

All 3 of your questions' answers depends on the phone and the ROM. Some require root, some will do it for you.
