SD Card at random times is 'damaged' in my smart phone

This has happened three times over the past year or so since I brought this ZTE T83_T02 "Dave" Phone. Android Version 4.1.2
Tried removing then mounting, restarting etc several times - - but the only way to continue is to reformat the card. This means all my music and photos are lost.
Surely this is a android problem. Somehow it corrupts my SD card and I have to reformat.
Please shed some light on this.

Welcome to Android Central! Does it happen with other cards? If the card is counterfeit, it might do this if the card reaches its true capacity, but the system keeps trying to write data beyond that. Use SD Insight to make sure the card is what it says it is.
