Do I have to press the button the right side of the phone every time I want to use it?

AC Question

It's awkard to push the button (I'm a lefty) & it seems like a lot of steps to have to go thru to check a text, look at email, answer aa call etc: press button on right, unlock screen, & then click on what you want.

Greetings and welcome to Android Central!

Just curious here, what phone do you have? Are you using the stock launcher? Depending on the phone/launcher you have it may allow you to "customize" how you wish to open up a specific app/task that you want to do, although it may be limited. But there are other available Launcher apks that you can download from Google Play that'll allow for more customization to suit one's accessibility on their phone.

Hope you find what you're looking for and enjoy!

And if it's an LG, it might have a "double tap to toggle the screen" function - which you can do with either hand. (My wife's a lefty and has no problems with her Note 3 [large phone] with the button on the right side - and she's had a stroke.)
