I got a refurbished Galaxy S3 several months ago after the screen on my Nexus 4 broke. I loved my Nexus 4 but wasn't able to afford a new one at that time. Now the screen has broken on my Galaxy. Since I need to get one of them fixed (and will continue to use it until the phone dies), would it be unwise to get my Nexus fixed and go back to it? Will I be able to get the new operating system? Is it true that the Galaxy 3 will no longer recieve updates and will never be updated to 5.0 Lollipop? Is the Nexus 4 4G compatible?

Please let me know the pros/cons of continuing use of these old phones and what I need to know about upgrading them in whatever way I can?

Welcome to Android Central! The Nexus 4 can get 5.1.1--the factory image is here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images. It does not officially have LTE, although there are supposed to be some hacks to activate it: Bring Back LTE on the Google Nexus 4 Running Lollipop. Otherwise, you can use HSPA+ ("pseudo 4G," although it's technically 3G).
