    When I send a text, how do I know if it was read?

    You simply can't, unless it's a social network app or something of its sort.

    You can use an email app that allows you to request a return receipt. But some apps (on the recipient's side) return a receipt when they receive an email, some wait until it's opened. You still can't be sure that it was read, though, only that it was opened. Requesting a reply - and getting one - is about the only sure way.
