How do you to turn LCD backlight off halfway?

I can't seem to find this question posted anywhere on the internet, so let me try to explain.

Now if I set my phone to auto lock when it's idle, then right before it turns off, the backlight dims for a second before the whole screen turns off. Since I use my phone a lot in the dark I like to keep the screen brightness on minimum, but that's still too bright so I use an app called Lux Lite. Now the app is not bad, but all it does is stick a dark overlay on your screen to create the illusion of lower brightness. That doesn't cut out for me.

Is there any way I could switch to that "dim" mode my phone goes to before auto locking? I remember some old Nokia phone I owned a long time ago that actually let you turn the backlight brightness down completely and I thought to myself, how can a smartphone not have that feature. If the phone can go darker, why don't I have the option to reduce brightness further?

You do - Settings/Device/Display/Brightness. Set it to where you want. Or use an app like Velis Auto Brightness. You can set the curve manually, so when you're in a dark room, the screen gets really dark, but in sunlight, it's fully lit.
