Why do i see a battery with a lightning bolt when plugged in?

The s4 just stopped working. Plugged it to charge it, heard a shrill sound and unplugged. Now it does nothing.

Welcome to Android Central! So do you see a battery icon with a lightning bolt, or do you see nothing? It's not quite clear from your post.

Try using a new or different battery.
