I've encountered this problem a lot with my phone, where it says there is no storage available. This is always due to pictures taking up space on the phone. The only problem is, there are no photos on the phone currently (having removed them already) and hooking up the phone to my computer doesn't show where this large amount of space is coming from. Still, the phone says I have 803MB of pictures.

When this happened previously on this phone, I was able to delete a large file in the .thumbnails folder. But within a couple weeks this happened again, and this time that folder is empty.

Where is all this storage going to, and how can I free it up?

You must have cached pictures saved to a hidden folder on the device. Do you need that additional memory? if not, then I won't worry about it. Otherwise, try re-formatting the SD card or clearing the cache of that hidden folder. Most file managers can enable an option to show hidden files/folders. From there you should be able to delete it.
