How do I stop the screen from going black after a call is answered

When it get a call or make a call the screen is on and shows the phone display but as soon as it is answered the screen goes black. I sometimes need it to be on because I need the dial pad. When I try to get it back up I lose the call or it's to late to enter a number or anything. I need help can anyone tell me how to fix this. I have an Android phone thru Straighttalk. I don't know the type right off but I know it's an Android.

Some phones have special settings for when a call is placed or answered. Check for something like that under call settings. Also, to avoid ending the call when you press power go to settings - security and make sure the "power button instantly locks" option is off.
