I have a Nexus 5, Lollipop 5.1.1. Build LMY48M. Today suddenly the Menu orientation of my phone changed to Vertical one with a scroll bar on right side and the "Search App" bar at the top.

Earlier it was a normal left-right swipe menu. Now it is a vertical up/down scrolling menu. I don't know how it changed. There was no software update or anything.

Can anyone tell me how this happened? And is there a setting to switch back to the original left/right swipe.

Welcome to Android Central! It was the latest Google app update. You can't change it back (unless you sideload an older version of the Google app, I would guess). You could consider installing an alternative launcher like Nova.
