Selecting key text in messaging (sms) application?

So I just bought a new Moto x pure to replace my old s3. My current issue comes from trying to select certain words or numbers from a text message in google messenger/sms app. I remember in my old s3 all I had to do was press and hold that word/s and a selection tool would come up. This however does not happen on my new phone. It simply selects the whole text bubble including all the text. Why can I no longer do this in the messaging app of the phone?

*Selecting text however is still possible in whatsapp or on documents or websites.

That's the way these stock apps work. If you want to copy just a portion you'll need to paste the whole text first. You could try with some other messaging apps from the Play Store and check if they have that option.
