I have a Samsung Galaxy A3, model number SM-A300FU which is being used as a test device.

It is currently running Android 4.4.4, but I would like to downgrade to 4.2 for testing purposes if possible.

I've checked some rooting guides and tried to get a suitable 4.2 rom from sammobile, as well as hunting on google without success.

I think, as Android 4.2 was released in 2012 and this particular phone was released in 2014, there is no suitable 4.4.4 rom available.

Is there a different avenue I can pursue to resolve this problem please?

Unfortunately you won't be able to find a stock 4.2 ROM since the device was not released. You can try downloading and building 4.2 source; however, I suspect you'd encounter lots of issues and having to write a lot of code to get the device booted. Best case scenario is to purchase a used working device (condition doesn't matter) that is running 4.2 to test.
